Want to make very potent honey tincture? In this medicated honey recipe we’ll show you how to make canna honey with BHO coconut oil.

The result is a great-tasting cannabis honey you can eat straight or use in all kinds of edibles recipes. It tastes great and is very strong. We’ll show you how to accurately dose THC levels of your honey tincture to ensure a fun time.

This recipe will show you how to make canna honey for a 12oz batch. Each teaspoon will contain about 10 mg THC which will allow you to adjust dosage easily. A typical user will want to start with 10-30 mg THC per serving.  You can also increase potency by adjusting your BHO coconut oil percentages.

Basic medicated honey recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 gram of shatter/butane hash oil (BHO)/wax/crumble
  • 3 tablespoons organic coconut oil
  • 10 oz. honey

How to make canna honey

  1. Decarboxylate your shatter to activate the THC. Learn how to decarb shatter here.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a small mason jar set in a pan of boiling water. Or skip the mason jar and use a double boiler if you have one.
  3. Add decarbed shatter to mason jar with oil, stirring to incorporate it. Heat for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
  4. Mix honey and BHO coconut oil using a stick blender or food processor in a small mixing bowl. Mix until incorporated. Make sure not to leave chunks of oil or certain doses will be more potent.

This medicated honey recipe makes 12 ounces of tincture. Enjoy!

  • To cut this recipe in half, try using 1/2 gram shatter, 1 and 1/2 tablespoons coconut oil, and 5 oz. of honey.
  • To cut potency in half, just use half the shatter and the same amounts of the other ingredients.
  • To double potency, double the amount of BHO used in the coconut oil.

Note that your canna honey tincture may separate over time. If it does, just give it another quick blend and you’re back in business.

How to store cannabis honey tincture

The best way to store a large batch of cannabis honey is in tight fitting containers such as mason jars. They keep it sealed tight and offer easy access. Just keep out of direct sunlight, which degrades THC. A small mason jar is enough to store the cannabis tincture in this recipe, or you can divide it into small batches to share with friends.

If you’re looking to save a few bucks just wash out and reuse a small jar food jar: jelly, olives, baby food, etc.  There’s no need to refrigerate, both the medicated honey and the coconut oil it contains do fine at room temperature.

You can also just return your medicated honey to the original honey container. This is great if you want to spice up parties – just give everyone a plastic spoon and a little squeeze and you’ll be ready to blast off in no time.

How to make THC honey sticks

For individual serving size containers we like to use plastic straws to make THC honey sticks. You can also use the same recipe above to make CBD honey sticks, just use a CBD concentrate to make the medicated coconut oil.

Plastic straws hold about one teaspoon of medicated THC honey per stick.

Warm the honey in its original squeeze container so it flows loosely, and then squeeze it in. Put the container in hot (but not close to boiling) water for 10 minutes to warm it.

To seal the straw before loading, squeeze the bottom tip shut with needle nose pliers near the end to make it flat, leaving about the width of a penny exposed. Then use a lighter to seal the ends. They’ll burn down and should seal together. Do a bunch and let cool.

It’s best to use see-through straws so you can make sure they’re properly filled. Squeeze your honey bottle directly into straw. Fill pretty close to the top, but leave enough room for you to squeeze and seal the top.

Each should have about a teaspoon depending on straw size, just squeeze one out into a measuring spoon and you can tell how much is in there so you can gauge potency.

Make sure to store your medicated honey sticks upright and check to make sure they don’t leak, sometimes the lighter method to seal straws isn’t perfect. Squeeze gently to test the seal.

There are better solutions to sealing medicated honey straws (such as a straw filler machine, $679), but the lighter/candle technique is free and easy enough to do.

How much THC is in canna honey?

Now that you’ve learned how to make canna honey using shatter, you’ll want to make sure that you are able to dose THC levels correctly. The following estimates apply if you’re using shatter, and you can adjust based on the potency of the cannabis material you use.

This medicated honey recipe uses BHO coconut oil for potency and flavor. The dosage is about 10 ml of THC per teaspoon, but it can easily be adjusted..
This medicated honey recipe uses BHO coconut oil for potency and flavor. The dosage is about 10 ml of THC per teaspoon, but it can easily be adjusted.

Since shatter is typically around the 70-72% THC range, we’ll estimate it at 72% for some easy math.

  • If you make this medicated honey recipe with 1 gram (or 1000 mg) of shatter, you’ll have about 720 mg THC assuming you properly decarbed it.
  • Each ounce of your THC honey tincture will have 60 mg THC, and each teaspoon will have 10 mg.
  • If you make your weed honey with 2 grams of shatter, each teaspoon will have 20 mg THC.

The cool thing about turning oil into honey using this medicated honey recipe is that you can easily scale up or down the THC based on your desired dosage.

As with all edibles, keep out of the hands of children and pets. Label it clearly as for adults only so someone doesn’t inadvertently ingest it.

This THC-infused honey recipe can be used to turn all kinds of foods into weed edibles. Add to your favorite tea, drizzle over pancakes or toast, or enjoy a squeeze straight out of the bear’s head.  Enjoy your cannabis honey tincture and give lots of samples to your friends!

How to make canna honey with kief or hash

If you don’t have concentrates needed to make the BHO coconut oil used in this medicated honey recipe, you could use other cannabis material.

The Cuisinart stick blender works well to integrate the THC coconut oil and the honey.Kief and hash are good, but they don’t fully dissolve into the honey like shatter will. So you may have some grainy chunks. It still will get your head in the right place, but won’t be as tasty or smooth to eat. Try to diffuse for a longer period of time (30 minutes) and then strain to remove the solids.

You’d just need to decarb the kief or hash, then add it to the coconut oil the same way as described in the recipe above.

Canna honey recipe using buds or trim

Using plant material such as buds, popcorn buds, or trim is not recommended. The “weedy” flavor of the resulting oil will be too pronounced, and your honey will taste like chlorophyll.  Yuck.

If you’re hell-bent on making honey with buds, you would need to first decarb the material, then cook for a bit in a double boiler with the oil to transfer the activated THC.

If you have buds or trim, consider a dry sift extraction over a screen to get some kief for this recipe. This removes most of the green material, improving the flavor of the oil.

Or consider making cannabutter with trimmings. Then you can use the canna butter to bake brownies or other stronger tasting items, which will help mask the plant taste better than honey tincture would.
